20 arrests following May 1

20 people detained during the May 1 demonstrations were arrested this morning following the completion of investigations.

In a statement to Ayça Söylemez from Bianet, Çağdaş Hukukçular Derneği (Progressive Lawyers Association, ÇHD) Istanbul Branch President Gökmen Yeşil said that the number of detention according to the data they gathered was 479, and that 20 people had been arrested. Yeşil added that they would file a collective appeal against the arrest verdict.

In a statement yesterday, the 1 Mayıs’ta Adalet için Hukukçular/May 1 Lawyers for Justice group had given the number of detentions as 452. The Police Directorate announced the figure as 408.

The ground for arrest was “propaganda of a terrorist organization” for some and “dissent to Law no. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations” for others.

A high school student under the age of 18 was also among those arrested.
