Turkey is convicted by ECHR once again because of unexpected death of a soldier. Turkey will pay 22.000 euros.

On January 2009, Burhan Güzelaydın died during his military service in Hakkari. The family appealed to ECHR and the case is concluded today. ECHR convicted Turkey due to violation of right to life.

After Güzelaydın's death, the military authorities claimed that he had committed suicide. On the other hand, thinking their son was killed, the family filed a lawsuit. After Ağrı High Penal Court refused the lawsuit, the administrative court also concluded that “he had shot himself”.

However, the autopsy revealed that Güzelaydın was tortured and died because of blunt trauma.

Today, ECHR made the ruling on Güzelaydın case. The court concluded that Turkey has violated the right to life and sentenced Turkey to pay 22.000 euros as compensation.
