During the seminar, participants will learn the Armenian alphabet and begin reading Turkish texts written in Armenian script. The program will examine various types of texts, including newspapers, books, petitions, family letters, songs, and medical prescriptions, as well as printed works and manuscripts from different periods.
Comparative Readings
The seminar will be held online on Wednesdays from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. (Istanbul time) between October 14 and December 23, 2026. The instruction language of the seminar will be Turkish. Using texts from Istanbul, Anatolia, and different regions of the Ottoman Empire, the sessions will explore local uses of Turkish, regional dialects, and words and expressions not encountered in the modern standard written language. Official documents, personal correspondence, periodicals, and manuscripts from different archives and collections will be read comparatively.
The seminar is limited to 20 participants and costs 7,500 Turkish lira. Knowledge of Armenian is not a prerequisite. The program is open to anyone interested in Ottoman and Armenian history, social and cultural history, the history of language, and historical sources.
