Istanbul Governor suggests merging some schools for earthquake safety

Administrators and principals of Armenian schools met with Istanbul Governor Davut Gül, the Istanbul Provincial Director of National Education, and officials from the General Directorate of Foundations. Bedros Şirinoğlu, president of the Union of Armenian Foundations (ERVAB) and the Surp Prgich Armenian Hospital Foundation, said that the schools have financial difficulties, that there are 15 active schools and this number is too high. It is necessary to merge schools. He also said that some schools may suffer damage in the case of an earthquake. Governor Gül, for his part, suggested that schools with small student populations and earthquake risks should be merged with schools that have larger student populations and are structurally resistant to earthquakes.
