Before the NATO Summit scheduled for July 7–8 in Ankara, operations were conducted in numerous provinces. It was reported that dozens of people have been taken into custody.
During the operations in Istanbul, Ankara, İzmir, Kocaeli, Çanakkale, Antalya, and Bursa, lawyers, members of the Revolutionary Youth Association, staff and readers of the Revolutionary Movement magazine, and law students were detained. It was also reported that 11 members of the People's Houses (Halkevleri), including Antalya People's House Chair Gülcan Şahin and the entire branch executive board, as well as officials from the Workers' Party of Turkey (TİP) Antalya Provincial Organization, a provincial official of the Labor Party (Emek Partisi) in Kocaeli, and members of Labor Youth (Emek Gençliği), were detained after police raided their homes and broke down their doors.
Academic Sibel Özbudun and writer Temel Demirer were also detained in Istanbul this morning. It was learned that Özbudun and Demirer were detained as part of an investigation conducted by the Muğla Chief Public Prosecutor's Office concerning their social media posts.
Progressive Lawyers Association Istanbul Branch President Also Detained
Progressive Lawyers Association (ÇHD) announced that Istanbul Branch President attorney Ezgi Önalan and branch member Attorney Yunusemre Işık were detained in a police operation carried out before dawn. The association also stated that it had received information that many of their clients had been detained in simultaneous operations.
In its statement, ÇHD said: "Our Istanbul Branch President, attorney Ezgi Önalan, was detained in a police operation carried out at her home before dawn. We have also learned that many of her clients were detained simultaneously. These political operations, which promise NATO a rose garden without thorns, must come to an end."
It was also reported that law students Boran Işıldak and Burhan Can were detained yesterday in Ankara's Tuzluçayır neighborhood, while Odatv editor Ceren Erdoğdu was detained this morning.
"Turquoise" Operation
Authorities also reported that, as part of the "Turquoise" operations conducted in Ankara ahead of the NATO Summit, 46 suspects identified as having shared images or content involving firearms were detained.
According to the Demirören News Agency (DHA), the detainees were individuals with numerous prior criminal records who were taken into custody as part of an investigation being conducted by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.
