İnan Akgün Alp, Kars MP of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), visited the archaeological site of Ani on the Turkey–Armenia border and delivered messages regarding the normalization process between two countries. Traveling to the immediate border area, Alp emphasized the importance of lasting peace and regional security in Turkey’s relations with Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Alp said they wanted the historic Silk Road Bridge on the Turkey–Armenia border to become a “Bridge of Peace,” stating: “We call for the issues between Azerbaijan and Armenia to be resolved through lasting peace, for Turkey to become a security zone, and for border trade between Turkey and Armenia to resume.”
In his remarks, Alp also highlighted the importance of achieving a lasting peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia, saying:
“The Ancient City of Ani was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2016. Directly opposite us, on the other side of the water, is Armenian territory. The bridge you see is the historic Silk Road Bridge, which we hope will become a ‘Bridge of Peace.’ We call for the issues between Azerbaijan and Armenia to be resolved through lasting peace, for Turkey to become a security zone, and for border trade between Turkey and Armenia to resume.”
Ani: A UNESCO World Heritage Site
The archaeological site of Ani, located on the Turkey–Armenia border and known as the “city of a thousand and one churches,” was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2016.
Located near the village of Ocaklı, approximately 44 kilometers from the center of Kars, the site stood out throughout history as an important center of trade and lodging along the Silk Road. Also known as the “land of kings with a population of 100,000,” Ani was home to different cultures and civilizations over the centuries.
