DOUBLE MESSAGE FROM PAPIKYAN
"We will not enter an arms race; we will encourage women to join the army"
Armenian Defense Minister Suren Papikyan made significant statements regarding the country's defense strategy and the role of women in the military during a press conference.
Addressing armament policy first, Papikyan emphasized that Armenia has no intention of entering an arms race with any country, including Azerbaijan, and that this is the government's clear stance. However, the Minister underlined that this policy does not mean defense capabilities will be compromised. Papikyan stated, "Not entering a race does not mean we will stop purchasing weapons and ammunition or end the modernization process of the army. Armenia will continue to make necessary acquisitions in line with its defense needs."
Call for Women to Join the Military
Another important agenda item of the meeting was the place of women in the armed forces. Calling on women to take more active advantage of the opportunities offered by military service, Papikyan pointed out that the biggest obstacle in this regard is social stereotypes.
Stating that there are many women who want to serve their country but are hindered by family and environmental pressure, the Minister noted: "The factor of brother, father, husband, or social circle stands in front of women. Even when women are granted equal opportunities, they often hesitate to use those opportunities because of these social pressures. As a society and as women, we have the problem of breaking these molds."
Stating that the Ministry will carry out more intensive work to increase the participation and visibility of women in the army, Papikyan concluded his words by saying: "We are preparing to encourage women because their presence is truly very important. It is my duty to make their role more visible, but the support of the press is also essential in this process."
