We have lost the pillar and history of our newspaper, the editor of our Armenian section, our everything, Sarkis Seropyan, this evening, on 28 March 2015, Saturday. We bow respectfully before the memory of Sarkis Seropyan, who has been a symbol synonymous with Agos since its foundation, and offer our condolences to his family and all loved ones.

Dutch Journalist Geerdink charged with ‘terror organisation propaganda’
Arrested and then released last month in Diyarbakır, Dutch journalist Frederike Geerdink has been charged with ‘propaganda for a terrorist organisation’ and faces a sentence from 1 to 5 years if found guilty.

The first issue of Charlie Hebdo to be published since the attack on its offices hits the stands today in France and across the world. This issue of the magazine will remain on sale for 2 weeks. The cover depicting the Prophet Muhammad divided opinion across world media.

Cumhuriyet: First searched, then protected
Last night, Police carried out a search on the delivery trucks of Cumhuriyet newspaper that today has published a 4-page selection from the new issue of Charlie Hebdo magazine. The Şişli, Istanbul, offices of the newspaper are currently sealed off by police for security purposes.

Displays of solidarity across the world: “We are all Charlie”
The attack carried out on the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo continues to be widely condemned. Solidarity messages on social media have used the hashtag #JeSuisCharlie while the National Union of French Journalists called for a vigil in the name of press freedom and democracy at 5 PM local time at the Place de la Republique, Paris.

Dutch journalist Geerdink released
Frederike Geerdink, the only foreign journalist based in Diyarbakır and known for her comprehensive research and articles on the Kurdish issue, was detained today by an Anti-Terror Squad that raided her home. Geerdink was later released after providing a statement.

This is the best response to those who say ‘Armenians should bring out their documents’
Zakarya Mildanoğlu’s book ‘Armenian Periodicals 1794-2000’ has been published by Aras Yayıncılık. Mildanoğlu’s work brings together around 3650 Armenian periodicals from the year 1794, when the first Armenian newspaper Aztarar was published, until the year 2000. We talked with Zakarya Mildanoğlu about his book which is the product of around 30 years of work, and the over 200 year history of Armenian periodicals.
