Denial attack from Ankara Metropolitan Municipality
The Ankara Metropolitan Municipality has now ventured into the “Armenian Question”. On February 14, the Municipal Council issued a decision to purchase books and brochures on the “Armenian Question” to be distributed to various institutions.

Treasury demands ‘occupation fine’ from Bulgarian Foundation for its own building
The State of Turkey, after having seized a building that belongs to the Bulgarian Exarchate Orthodox Church Foundation, is now demanding a fee in return for occupying the building for 3 years –after returning the building to the foundation. The Treasury has issued a 50 thousand TL fine to the foundation.

‘Turkey is responsible of whatever happens in Kessab’
People continue their struggle to survive in Kessab, a town on the border of Syria with Turkey in the Hatay province area. Following the occupation of the town by Al-Nusra forces last year, the Armenians in the town had been dispersed, with most of them coming to Vakıflı Village in Hatay, and had returned after the Syrian army had retaken the town. However, the people of Kessab now face the threat of ISIS.

Are Ozbek refugees being handed over to ISIS?
Aybüke Ekici, General Secretary of the International Refugee Rights Association, has expressed concern over allegations that some Ozbek refugees may have been sent from Suruç to areas under the control of ISIS. Ekici added that they had received reports that ISIS was executing refugees that refused to join them.

New Batman Airport land dispute
Following the land dispute involving the plot on which Diyarbakır Airport today stands, the land plot on which Batman Airport stands has also become the subject of a lawsuit. Zuart Sudjian has filed a case claiming that the State had built an airport on the plot she had inherited. Sudjian’s land in nearby Diyarbakır had also been appropriated by the State, and the Diyarbakır Airport was built on a part of her plot.

Journalist and writer Nuh Köklü became the target of a knife attack while playing snowball with his friends in Kadıköy, Istanbul. Köklü passed away at the Haydarpaşa Numune Hospital where he was taken.

Human rights activist and lawyer Eren Keskin has assessed the Perinçek v. Switzerland case heard at the European Court of Human Rights in a column piece for the Özgür Gündem newspaper. Keskin states that Perinçek’s words “cannot be construed within the scope of the freedom of expression”, and adds that they “clearly amount to an abetment to crime.”

ECHR decision could take a year
The ‘Genocide Case’ hearing was held at the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights on January 28. A high number of politicians and civilian society leaders from Turkey, Armenia and the Diaspora were present in the courtroom. The case has also attracted interest from the international press since Amal Clooney represents Armenia. It could take up to a year for the reasoned decision in the case to be issued.

The ‘race code scandal’ in minority schools continues despite a broad public outcry. In the most recent case, two students were barred from registering at Armenian schools. An official from the Istanbul National Education Directorate made a statement, saying, “We are checking the race status of the students”. İsmail Cem Halavurt, lawyer of the parents of the students who were not admitted to the schools, said, “The Ministry is committing a crime”.

Sargsyan issues Holocaust Remembrance Day statement
Serzh Sargsyan, President of the Republic of Armenia, issued a written statement on the occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. In his statement Sargsyan said, “Perhaps, it might have been possible to prevent the crimes committed under the veil of World War II had the crimes against humanity committed during the World War I earned unequivocal international condemnation, and had those responsible for them been duly punished.”
