Fire in student dormitory leaves 12 dead

In Adana, fire broke out in a private student dormitory housing middle and high school students, killing 11 children and one resident adviser. Adana Mayor said that the emergency stairway was probably locked.

In Adana, fire broke out in a private student dormitory housing middle and high school students, killing 11 children and one resident adviser. 

Broadcasting ban was imposed on the incident.

An electrical fault

Fatih Durukan, the head of Adana fire brigade department, stated that the fire was caused by an electrical fault. Pointing out that the interior of the building was covered with timber, Durukan said that this is why the fire had spread so quickly.

Mayor: the emergency stairway was locked

Adana Mayor Hüseyin Sözlü said that the bodies of the children were found near the emergency stairway.

Stating that the emergency stairway was probably locked, Sözlü said that the wooden roof fell down on the children.
