Three "academics for peace" arrested

Sent to the court for arrest by the prosecutor yesterday, Esra Mungan, Kıvanç Ersoy and Muzaffer Kaya are arrested last night.

Three academics who read the declaration stating that they insist on peace on behalf of Academics for Peace/Istanbul group were taken into custody yesterday. Last night, they are arrested by the court on duty.

The trial of Esra Mungan, Kıvanç Ersoy and Muzaffer Kaya, who were sent to the court for arrest by the prosecutor, began around 17.45 yesterday. Only the lawyers were allowed into the hearing room.

6th Penal Court Peace decided that three academics to be arrested with the accusation of “making propaganda for a terrorist organization”. One of the lawyers of the academics, Meriç Eyüboğlu said, “We once again saw that there is no law in Turkey anymore,” and stated that they will appeal the decision.

Speaking in front of the court house on behalf of the lawyers of three academics, Eyüboğlu said: “This is a political decision. Issuing a warrant was also political. Our clients went to the police station of their own accord. Their residential addresses and workplaces are known; they can access them anytime they want. Despite that, a warrant was issued. Then, they are arrested, though the court has no legal justification for it. Of course, we will appeal the decision, but I want to repeat that this is an unlawful decision.”
